National Organization Backed by Sen. Sanders Supports Drug-Pricing Measure

SACRAMENTO, CA – Yes on Prop 61/Californians for Lower Drug Prices announced today that Our Revolution, a new nationwide organization backed by Sen. Bernie Sanders, has joined the fight against exorbitant drug prices, adding their name to a long list of Proposition 61 supporters. Prop. 61, the California Drug Price Relief Act of 2016, is a statewide November ballot measure that begins to address drug price-gouging by the pharmaceutical industry.

“Our Revolution is about transforming American society by making our political and economic systems work for all of us, not just the 1 percent,” said Jeff Weaver, President of Our Revolution.  “It is unacceptable that Americans live in fear that they will go bankrupt because of the outrageously high cost of their prescription drugs. By voting yes on Proposition 61 the people of California have a chance to do what Congress has failed to do– stand up to the pharmaceutical industry. Ballot measures like Proposition 61 are essential first steps in making sure that we hold price-gouging drug companies accountable.”

“We are delighted to have the strong support of not only Sen. Sanders, but now of Our Revolution as well,” said Garry South, lead strategist for Yes on Prop. 61. “We are building a substantial grassroots effort to take on the greed and money power of the drug companies. And with the latest revelation of outrageous drug price-gouging – this time for EpiPens, which can save the lives of children with extreme allergies – the people of California are more than ever ready to fight back.”

In a recent speech, Sanders noted that Our Revolution is “a movement of millions of people ready to fight for the country it can be.” Sanders previously personally endorsed Prop 61, and now his organization, representing millions of working individuals and young people, has also entered the fight against inhumane drug price-gouging. Not only will Prop. 61 directly save Californians money on prescription drugs, it will save billions for the state and launch a national conversation around the drug companies’ indefensible practices of letting profits take precedence over human lives.

Proposition 61 has been endorsed by AARP California, the California Nurses Association, Sen. Bernie Sanders, former U.S. Secretary of Labor Robert Reich, civil rights and labor activist Dolores Huerta, the Rev. Al Sharpton, the Urban League, AIDS Healthcare Foundation, the Campaign for a Healthy California, Progressive Democrats of America, Social Security Works, VoteVets Action Fund, the California Council of Churches IMPACT, and many others.
